
Creating Photorealistic Backgrounds with AI, Down to the Details
Background plates fail differently from hero images. Here is how to generate backgrounds with real depth, consistent light, and detail that holds up.
Generating a photorealistic hero image and generating a photorealistic background are different jobs, and most guides only cover the first. A hero image only has to look good on its own. A background has to look good behind something else, which is a much harder constraint and fails in ways that are easy to miss until the composite is finished.
The usual symptom is a plate that looks fine in isolation and looks obviously wrong the moment you drop a subject onto it. Here is why that happens and how to prompt around it.

What makes a background different
A background has a job: to sit behind a subject and be believable without competing. That means three things a hero image never has to worry about.
- A hole in the middle. Something is going to sit in the frame. If the interesting part of your plate is dead centre, you are about to cover it up.
- A committed light direction. Your subject is lit from somewhere. If the plate disagrees, the composite reads as fake instantly, and viewers notice this even when they cannot say why.
- Depth that behaves. Real backgrounds fall off in focus and contrast with distance. Generated ones are often uniformly sharp, which is the single biggest giveaway.
Depth is the thing that sells it
If you fix only one thing, fix this. Uniformly sharp images are the most reliable tell of AI generation, because real cameras cannot do it. A lens focused on the midground renders the distance softer and lower in contrast, and our eyes read that falloff as depth without any conscious effort.
So name the layers explicitly. Rather than describing one flat scene, describe what is near, what is middle, and what is far, and say how each is rendered.

Haze deserves particular mention. Atmospheric perspective, where distant things get paler and lower contrast because of the air between you and them, is doing an enormous amount of work in every real photograph. Asking for it directly costs you three words and adds more perceived realism than almost anything else you can type.
Commit to a light direction
Generated images often have vague, everywhere-at-once lighting. It looks pleasant and it is unusable for compositing, because your subject has a definite key light and the plate has none for it to agree with.
Say where the light comes from and what kind it is. "Hard sunlight from the upper left, long shadows to the right" gives you a plate you can actually match a subject to. It also gives the image more shape, because shadow is what makes surfaces read as three dimensional.


Both are competent images. Only the left one tells you where to put your key light.
Detail that survives inspection
"Highly detailed" is one of the least useful phrases you can put in a prompt. It is a quality adjective, not a description, and models tend to answer it with busy texture rather than the specific things that make a place feel real.
Real detail is specific and usually a bit mundane. Scuffs at the base of a wall where people brush past. A power socket. Cable runs. Uneven wear on a floor where the traffic goes. Slightly mismatched paint from a repair nobody finished properly. These are the things that say a place has been used.
- Ask for wear, not detail. Scuffed skirting, worn floor, chipped paint.
- Include the boring infrastructure. Sockets, vents, drains, downpipes, signage.
- Allow asymmetry. Perfectly aligned everything reads as rendered.
- Name one specific imperfection. A single water stain does more than any amount of "intricate detail".
- Skip the quality words entirely. 8k, ultra detailed, masterpiece. They add nothing here.
Realism is not more detail. It is the right detail, and the right detail is usually something slightly broken.
A workflow for plates you will actually composite
- Decide where the subject will sit, and leave that area quiet in your prompt.
- Generate the plate with layered depth and a named light direction in Text to Image.
- Iterate cheaply at low cost until the space and the light are right. Do not chase resolution yet.
- Cut your subject out with Remove Background.
- Composite, then check the light direction agrees before doing anything else.
- Push resolution last with Image Upscale, once the composite is settled.
Upscaling last matters more here than in most workflows. A background plate often needs to be larger than the final frame so you have room to reposition and crop, and upscaling early means every iteration takes longer and costs more for detail you may crop away anyway.
Matching a subject to the plate
Even with a good plate and a clean cutout, composites give themselves away in predictable places. Run through these before you call it done.
- Edge sharpness. A razor-sharp subject on a slightly soft plate looks pasted on. Match the softness.
- Colour temperature. Warm plate, cool subject reads as wrong immediately, even at a glance.
- Contact shadow. A subject with no shadow floats. This is the most common single failure.
- Grain and noise. A clean subject on a grainy plate, or the reverse, breaks the illusion.
- Perspective and horizon. If the plate's horizon sits at chest height, your subject has to agree.
Contact shadow is the one worth checking first. It is the cheapest to add and the most damaging to omit. A subject without one never quite settles into the scene no matter how well everything else is matched.
The short version
Backgrounds are the back half of a picture, so leave room for the subject and prompt for the space rather than a scene. Name your depth layers and ask for atmospheric haze, because uniform sharpness is the biggest tell there is. Commit to a light direction and generate the plate before you light the subject. Ask for wear and boring infrastructure instead of "highly detailed".
